Looking for your “black beauty”?

Registered with the Jockey Club as “Our Bonita Rose”, Betty is an 8 year old 16hh Thoroughbred mare with an impressive resume. She retired from the track sound in September 2020 after 48 starts — almost a “war horse”! We gave her the winter off before restarting her this year and she has flourished. Betty hacks out on trails and on the road with other horses, she’s great around cars and loud noises. She has a good start on the flat, learning all of her basic lateral movements and having a beautifully established natural rhythm w/t/c on the flat. Betty is an excellent mover with a lovely flat kneed trot and smooth, balanced canter. She will turn heads in the Hunter ring but could also go in number of directions with her natural athleticism and nice movement.

Betty has been started over fences and is honest and brave to fences. She has jumped Liverpools and other fillers without issue. She does not rush fences and is easy to bring back from a half halt, super soft snaffle mouth. She has jumped up to about 2’6”/2’9” through grids and has done small courses on and off property. This mare is naturally athletic and shows a lot of potential over fences and is extremely willing.

Betty has proven herself to be a sensible mare who was consistently sound in her lengthy career on the racetrack as well as in her new job following her life as a racehorse. She has fantastic hooves with good soles and is great barefoot, we only just put front shoes on recently as we have been riding her on roads a lot. She can easily go barefoot, may just need hoof boots or shoes if riding on pavement a lot.

Betty would be suitable for a confident junior or amateur working in a program with a trainer. She is not suited to complete beginners due to still being green so best for a balanced rider with some experience.

Betty’s only vice is that she weaves. We will not sell her to a home who does not intend to allow her ample time in a paddock or field. She is currently living in a pasture with two mares and has been fantastic, has not weaved once. She is a brilliant mare and will be happy as a clam if you just give her adequate time to be a horse. She spent a lot of time stalled during her racing career and deserves a home that will consider her needs. If you take care of her, she will take care of you.
